I don’t think I am a sinner.
I don’t think I am a sinner. I think when the Bible talks about sin it is speaking about really evil and wicked people, and not about ordinary people who are trying to live a decent life.
Perhaps it would be helpful to begin by defining sin. In the Bible, God has given us a law (the 10 Commandments) which He requires us to keep. Jesus explained its requirements like this, “Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”Mat 22:37-40
When our first parents Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they, and us in them, fell into a state of sin and misery. Our nature has thus become so corrupt that we are all conceived and born in sin. The Bible describes it like this, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”Rom 5:12
“Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”Rom 5:18-19 and again, “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”Psa 51:5
So you see we are completely unable to keep God’s law. We do not love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and we do not love our neighbour as ourselves. We are naturally inclined to hate God and our neighbour! “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”Rom 3:10 I hope by now you can see that not only are we all naturally born in sin, but we daily sin in thought, word and deed. Listen to what Jesus says, and honestly examine your own life, “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:”Mat 15:19
Whether we like it or not, this is the verdict that God has passed on each one of us, “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”Rom 3:10 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”Rom 3:23 “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”1Jo 1:8
